Discover Isle of Skye Scotland tours departing from Inverness. Embark on a captivating journey to The Misty Isle, unveiling the beauty of Eilean a’ Cheò, one of the most picturesque Hebridean Islands in the Highlands. Departing from the capital of the Highlands, we venture to the western coast, with stops at various destinations en route, including the renowned Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic fortresses.

Our journey begins in Inverness as we follow the shores of Loch Ness, hoping to catch a glimpse of Nessie, the legendary creature. A brief stop at Urquhart Castle offers a panoramic view of this historic ruin and the sprawling Loch Ness, the largest body of water in the UK by volume. Urquhart Castle, steeped in a tumultuous past, stands as a poignant symbol of the region’s history, marking a pivotal point in the oppression of the Highlands. Progressing through Invermorriston, we head towards Loch Claunie, continuing along Glen Shiel, the site of the historic Battle of Glen Shiel in June 1719.

Eilean Donan Castle (Caisteal Eilean Donnain)

Situated amidst the serene waters of Loch Duich, Eilean Donan Castle graces a small isle where three lochs converge: Alsh, Duich, and Long. Named in honor of Celtic saint Donan of Eigg, this historic landmark has endured since the mid-1200s, featuring a chapel built by the saint himself. Ravaged by the Royal Navy in 1719 following a standoff with Jacobites and Spanish forces, Lt Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap painstakingly restored the castle in the early 20th century, offering visitors a glimpse into its storied past.

The Isle of Skye

Crossing the renowned Skye bridge, constructed in 1995, we reminisce about the era when ferry services connected the mainland to the Isle of Skye since the early 1600s. Our journey then winds through the enchanting Isle of Skye, pausing at various captivating locales. While some may visit popular tourist hotspots, we also offer the flexibility to explore lesser-known gems. Before embarking on the tour, we prioritize understanding your preferences to tailor the itinerary accordingly. Whether you prefer exploring the west coast or seeking specific interests, we ensure a bespoke experience. Here are several enticing destinations to consider while exploring Skye:

  • Elgol (Optional boat ride)
  • Carbost and Talisker Distillery (Optional rib boat ride)
  • A very special lunch stop near Talisker with views to die for whilst you eat your lunch (this is a special lesser known location)

Magical day in Skye

My husband and I recently just got back from magically misty (maybe close to a downpour) day on the Isle of Skye with Ryan and had an absolutely unforgettable time. Weather can always be unpredictable, especially when you book months in advance, but Ryan was well equipped and prepared to handle any changes we need to make to keep the day running smoothly. Booking with him is a perfect treat if you want to make your trip extra if he offers you a Tunnock tea cake be sure to take one.

A spectacular day!

My family (4 adults) had an incredible and very full day touring the Isle of Skye with Ryan as guide and driver. The scenery was spectacular; the sense of history was awe-inspiring. Ryan has so much knowledge about the area (and we loved his linguistic explanations about place-names). It was worth every penny to have an expert drive and explain so that we could all experience the scenery and history, and simply drink it all in.

The best two days we spent in Scotland!

While visiting Inverness we booked a private tour with Sgurr Tours. We spent two days with Ryan exploring the Highlands and the Isle of Skye. I can't say enough about the experience, value of the tour and professionalism of Ryan Mackenzie. His knowledge of the area is amazing, and took us off the beaten path where those big tour companies can't go. He was very accommodating to customize the tour to our needs. We felt like rockstars traveling in his well equipped Mercedes van which was filled with snacks, drinks, blankets and even a wee dram of Whisky! Oh and did I mention Ryan is a professional photographer?? He took photos of us at each location we stopped, and his pics of the landscape were so much better than anything we took on our camera phones. All the images were provided in a file to us at no charge for us to save and print. If you are visiting the Scottish Highlands, book a tour with Sgurr today, you wont regret it!
