Experience the rugged beauty of the Inner Hebrides on a premium day trip designed for those who wish to explore Skye properly. This is more than just a driving tour. It is an invitation to lace up your boots and stand beneath the towering pinnacle of the Old Man of Storr, which remains one of the most iconic natural landmarks in Scotland.

Conquer the Old Man of Storr

The highlight of your journey is the hike to the Storr. Unlike standard coach tours that only offer a distant photo opportunity, we provide the time required to hike the trail, breathe the mountain air, and witness the otherworldly rock formations up close. Whether you want to reach the very top or enjoy a steady walk to the best viewpoints, your local guide will ensure the pace is perfectly suited to your requirements.

Luxury Travel in a Mercedes-Benz V-Class

You can forget cramped buses and winding roads. You will travel from Inverness in the refined comfort of a luxury Mercedes-Benz V-Class. With plush leather seating, climate control, and expansive windows, the journey through the Highlands is as much a part of the experience as the destination itself. You can relax and enjoy the scenery while your professional driver handles the narrow Skye roads.

A Bespoke Skye Itinerary

While the Storr is our star attraction, your day is fully flexible. We curate the route to showcase the very best of the Isle of Skye, including the following highlights:

  • The Quiraing: Witness the dramatic landslips and sweeping views of the Trotternish Ridge.

  • Kilt Rock & Mealt Falls: See the ancient basalt columns and the waterfall that drops directly into the sea.

  • Portree: Enjoy a 45-minute lunch break in the colourful capital of Skye.

  • Eilean Donan Castle: A photo stop at one of the most romantic strongholds in Scotland.

The Return Journey: A Hidden Highland Gem

On our return to Inverness, we escape the main road crowds by taking the scenic back road. We shall stop at the historic Ledgowan Lodge Hotel for a brief break to soak in the atmosphere of a true family-run Highland estate. This charming establishment was once a Victorian hunting lodge and offers a peaceful end to an adventurous day.

Your Itinerary

1Morning - The Gateway to Skye

Departing Inverness, we follow the scenic banks of Loch Ness before turning west into the rugged heart of the Highlands .

Our journey toward the coast features dramatic mountain vistas, with photo stops at the serene Loch Cluanie and the towering peaks of Glen Shiel.

The morning highlight is a visit to the iconic Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland’s most cinematic 13th-century fortresses.

Before crossing the bridge to the Isle of Skye, we pause at the fairy-tale Manuela’s Wee Bakery, a charming hidden gem for a quick morning coffee and artisan treat.Once on the island, we visit the historic Sligachan Old Bridge, framed by the jagged Black Cuillin mountains and steeped in local folklore. We conclude the morning in the vibrant harbor town of Portree, where you will have time for a fresh Highland lunch at Gasta before we head to the Trotternish Ridge for your afternoon hike.

2Lunchtime - Lunch Stop Portree

No adventure on Skye is complete without a stop in its vibrant, colorful capital. We pause for a leisurely lunch in Portree, where we head straight to our favorite local gem: Gasta Portree. Here, you can refuel with authentic Highland cuisine prepared with the finest local ingredients.

While the savory dishes are superb, we highly recommend saving room for their famous artisan cakes and legendary, decadent hot chocolate—the ultimate indulgence before we head back into the wild for our afternoon hike.

3Afternoon - The Storr Hike & Trotternish Coast

After a relaxing lunch in Portree, we head directly to the Trotternish Peninsula for the centerpiece of your day: the Old Man of Storr. Unlike standard tours that only offer a distant photo, we provide a generous two-hour and 15-minute window to hike the trail. This allows you to reach the most iconic viewpoints and appreciate these massive geological formations at a steady, comfortable pace.

Once back from the hike, we discover the dramatic coastal scenery of the peninsula. We stop at the Rigg Viewpoint for sweeping vistas across the Sound of Raasay, followed by a visit to the magnificent Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls. You will see ancient basalt columns and witness the waterfall plunging directly into the sea below.

To conclude our Isle of Skye adventure, we begin our return journey through the towering Five Sisters of Kintail. We escape the main road crowds for a final, peaceful break at the historic Ledgowan Lodge Hotel—a former Victorian hunting lodge that provides a perfect Highland end to your day before we arrive back in Inverness.

Quick Tip for the Hike: Since this tour focuses on the Storr, we recommend wearing sturdy, waterproof hiking boots for the trail!

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Old Man of Storr hike?
The hike is classified as moderate. While the path is well-maintained, it involves a steady uphill climb with an elevation gain of about 250 meters. We allow a generous 2 hours and 15 minutes for this portion of the day to ensure you can hike at a comfortable, steady pace without feeling rushed.
Where do the tours depart from?
From your hotel in Inverness city centre for most people. Invergordon Cruise Port for selected shore excursions. Please let us know your hotel or accommodation address when booking so we know the exact pickup point.
Are these private tours?
Yes all our tours are private. Just you and your group, with a local driver-guide.
How many people can join a tour?
Our vehicles can carry up to 7 passengers in total, with plenty of luggage space. if your group is larger than 7 please reach out as we can organise a secondary vehicle.
What should I wear for the hiking tour?
Highland weather is famously unpredictable. We strictly recommend: Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support and grip (the trail can be slippery). Waterproof layers (jacket and trousers), regardless of the morning forecast. Warm layers, as the temperature drops significantly at the summit of the Trotternish Ridge.
Can I skip the hike and stay with the vehicle?
Absolutely. If you prefer a more relaxed day, you are welcome to enjoy the scenery from the comfort of the V-Class, which features climate control and expansive windows. Alternatively, your driver can suggest shorter, flatter walks near the base of the Storr.
Where does the tour start and end?
We offer a convenient door-to-door service. We will collect you directly from your Inverness hotel or B&B at 07:30 AM and return you there at approximately 08:00 PM.
What happens if the weather is extremely poor?
Safety is our priority. If the weather on Skye is deemed dangerous (high winds or zero visibility), your professional driver will discuss an alternative, lower-level itinerary that still captures the magic of the island without the summit risks.
Can we make the hike shorter so that we can visit The Quiraing?
Absolutely! One of the primary benefits of booking a private tour with Sgürr Tours is the total flexibility of your itinerary. While we typically dedicate a generous window to the Old Man of Storr, we understand that you may want to capture as many of Skye's iconic landscapes as possible. Because The Quiraing is located just a short, scenic drive further north on the Trotternish Peninsula, it is very easy to adjust the timing of your day. If you would prefer a shorter walk at the Storr to ensure you have time to witness the massive landslips and rock pinnacles of the Quiraing, simply let your driver know on the day. We are here to tailor the journey to your specific interests and pace.
