Highland Shore Excursion (Invergordon)

Maximise your time in Scotland with a premium private shore excursion from the Invergordon cruise port. Our bespoke tours are designed to whisk you away from the crowded coach excursions and into the heart of the Highlands in the comfort of a luxury Mercedes-Benz V-Class. Whether you wish to walk the historic fields of Culloden or catch a glimpse of the elusive Loch Ness Monster, we provide a seamless, high-end experience tailored perfectly to your ship’s docking schedule.

Historic Landmarks: Culloden and Clava Cairns

Just a short drive from the port, you can step back 4,000 years at Clava Cairns, a remarkably well-preserved Bronze Age cemetery featuring ancient standing stones and passage graves. Nearby lies the atmospheric Culloden Battlefield, the site of the final Jacobite Rising of 1746. You can pay your respects at the clan stones and explore the world-class visitor centre to learn about the conflict that changed the course of British history.

The Grandeur of Highland Castles

Our excursions offer the opportunity to visit some of Scotland’s most storied fortresses. You may choose to explore Cawdor Castle, a stunning family home with ties to Shakespeare’s Macbeth and exquisite gardens. Alternatively, we can visit Castle Leod, the seat of Clan Mackenzie and the historical inspiration for “Castle Leoch” in the Outlander series. For those interested in military history, Fort George provides a look at the most formidable 18th-century artillery fortification in Europe.

Loch Ness and Local Craftsmanship

No visit to the Highlands is complete without seeing Loch Ness. We can tailor your day to include the northern shores of the loch, where you can admire the scenery and search for Nessie. If your timing aligns, we can also visit the Prickly Thistle Wool Mill. This is a rare opportunity to witness the traditional craft of Highland weaving up close, though please note that tours here are conducted only once per month and must be checked for availability.

Premium Travel in a Mercedes-Benz V-Class

We understand that comfort is paramount after time at sea. You will travel in a luxury Mercedes-Benz V-Class, featuring plush leather seating, climate control, and expansive windows for the best views of the Highland landscape. Your Itinerary

1Morning: Ancient History and Jacobite Legacy

We depart from the Invergordon cruise terminal and head directly south to Culloden Battlefield. This historic site was the location of the Battle of Culloden on 16 April 1746, marking the final civil war battle to take place on British soil. You will have time to explore the moor and the visitor centre to understand the profound impact this conflict had on the Highland way of life.

A short distance away lies Clava Cairns. These 4,000-year-old Neolithic chambered cairns and standing stones offer a quietly moving glimpse into Scotland’s prehistoric past.
This site is remarkably well-preserved and is often cited as a key inspiration for the Outlander series.

2Lunchtime: Traditional Hospitality at Cawdor Tavern

For lunch, we visit the renowned Cawdor Tavern. Situated in the heart of a beautiful conservation village, this historic tavern offers a warm Highland welcome and delicious local cuisine.
It is the perfect setting to relax and enjoy a hearty meal before our afternoon explorations begin.

3Afternoon: The Majesty of Cawdor Castle

After lunch, we take a short drive through the village to visit Cawdor Castle. This magnificent, historic building remains a family home and is surrounded by three distinct and beautiful gardens. You will have the opportunity to explore the castle’s interior, hear its fascinating stories, and immerse yourself in the heritage of one of the most romantic castles in Scotland.

Following our visit, we begin our scenic return journey to the Invergordon cruise terminal, ensuring you arrive back comfortably in time for your ship’s departure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a private tour or will I be sharing the vehicle with others?
All our tours are strictly private and exclusive to your group. We do not offer shared tours, so you will have the entire Mercedes-Benz V-Class and the undivided attention of your professional guide to yourselves throughout the day.
Where exactly do you meet us at the port?
We provide a convenient collection service right at the Invergordon cruise pier. Your professional guide will be waiting for you near the gangway or at the designated private tour collection point.
Are lunch and entrance fees included in the tour price?
The tour price covers your private transport, fuel, insurance, and the services of your local guide. Lunch, refreshments, and entrance fees to attractions such as Urquhart Castle or Cruise are not included in the price and should be paid for at the time of booking when you go through the checkout process.
What should I wear for a day tour in the Highlands?
Scottish weather is famously unpredictable. We recommend wearing comfortable layers and bringing a waterproof jacket, even if the sun is shining when we depart. If you have booked a tour that includes a hike, such as the Old Man of Storr, sturdy walking boots or shoes with good grip are essential.
Are entrance fees for Culloden and Cawdor Castle included?
The tour price covers your private luxury transport, fuel, and the services of your local guide. Entrance fees to attractions can be paid for during checkout and the cost of lunch at Cawdor Tavern is not included and should be paid for on the day.
How many people can travel in the vehicle?
Our luxury Mercedes-Benz V-Class is designed to carry up to seven passengers comfortably. It offers ample legroom, leather seating, and plenty of space for any day bags or equipment you may wish to bring along for your Highland adventure.
Is there a lot of walking involved in this tour?
This tour offers a comfortable balance. Most sites are easily accessible, though walking over the uneven ground at Culloden Battlefield or through the gardens at Cawdor Castle is optional. Please let us know if you have any mobility concerns so we can adjust the pace.
What happens if our ship is delayed or cannot dock?
We monitor the port arrivals closely. If your ship is delayed, we will adjust the itinerary to ensure you still see the main highlights. In the rare event that your ship cannot dock due to weather, we offer a flexible cancellation policy for our shore excursion guests.
Can we customise the itinerary once we are on shore?
As this is a private tour, we can remain flexible. If you would prefer to spend more time at the castle or perhaps make a quick stop to see Loch Ness instead of a specific site, your guide will do their best to accommodate your requests while keeping an eye on the time.
